Unlimited Redemption inside Beer Universe — Kelton Ave & Union St, Schenectady, NY
Manual counting • Instant payout • No machine rejections • Pickups available
Let’s be real about grocery store bottle machines. You haul your bags in, wait for the person ahead of you to finish, load your cans one at a time, and then, at least a third of the time, one of them gets spit back out.
The machine freezes. The light blinks. Someone has to come over and reset it. By the time you walk out with your receipt, you’ve spent 25 minutes getting back the same $5.00 you could have had in two minutes somewhere else.
That’s the problem Unlimited Redemption exists to fix. We run two bottle and can return centers in Schenectady, one on Kelton Avenue, one on Union Street, both inside Beer Universe stores. No machines. A real person counts your stuff, you get paid on the spot, and you’re out the door. That’s the whole thing.
If you’ve been searching for a bottle return near you in Schenectady and keep ending up at the same frustrating grocery store experience, this post covers both of our locations, exactly how the process works, what we take, what we don’t, and who else we help beyond individual walk-ins.
Two Bottle & Can Return Centers in Schenectady, NY
Schenectady is a city of distinct neighborhoods, and the east side doesn’t always feel close to the south side when you’re the one driving with a trunk full of empties. That’s why we have two locations. Kelton Ave serves the lower south side and surrounding neighborhoods. Union St serves the Stockade area, Upper Union, and the Union College corridor. Between the two, we cover most of the city.
📍 Schenectady-Kelton: 26 Kelton Ave, Schenectady, NY 12304
The Kelton Ave location is inside Beer Universe at 26 Kelton Ave, in the 12304 zip code on the city’s south side. It’s accessible from Hamilton Hill, Mont Pleasant, and the surrounding residential areas, and it’s a straightforward stop whether you’re coming from downtown or cutting across from the Bellevue corridor.
Hours at Kelton are Monday through Saturday 9 AM to 8 PM, and Sunday 10 AM to 6 PM, that’s some of the longest redemption hours you’ll find in the area. Most places that take returns are limited to specific windows inside the store’s operating hours. The 8 PM close Monday through Saturday gives you a real option if you work during the day and can’t get there before 5.

📍 Schenectady-Union: 1701 Union St, Schenectady, NY 12309
The Union Street location is at 1701 Union St inside Beer Universe, in the 12309 zip code. Union Street is one of Schenectady’s main east-west arteries, running from the Stockade district on the west end through the Upper Union neighborhood and out toward the Niskayuna line. The location sits right in that corridor, which makes it a natural stop for anyone running errands along Union St.
It’s also the location Union College students and staff know best. The college is right there, dorms generate a lot of empties, and the Union St location handles high-volume returns comfortably, whether that’s a student bringing a laundry bag of cans or an organization running a bottle drive fundraiser out of the dorms. We’ll get to that later in this post.

“ Not sure which Schenectady location is closer to you? Kelton Ave covers the south side. Union St covers the Stockade, Upper Union, and the Union College area. Both are inside Beer Universe stores with the same hours and the same no-machines process.”
How Bottle & Can Return Works at Unlimited Redemption
The process is straightforward and that’s the whole point. Here’s what happens when you walk in:
1. Bring your empties in clear bags. This isn’t a deal-breaker if you forget, but clear bags make the count faster and keep things moving. If you’ve got a big load, separating glass from cans speeds things up.
2. Hand them off to our staff at the redemption counter inside Beer Universe. You don’t feed them into anything. You don’t wait for a machine to scan barcodes one at a time. A person takes them, counts them, and tells you what you’ve got.
3. Get paid on the spot. Instant cash payout for everything that qualifies under New York’s bottle bill. No slips to redeem at a register, no waiting for someone to approve it. Cash in hand.
4. Take your cash and head straight into Beer Universe — you’re already there. Put those returns toward a six-pack, a case, or whatever’s caught your eye. Empties in, fresh ones out. That’s the full loop.
The whole thing typically takes a few minutes for a standard household load. If you’ve got a large volume — say, after a party or a long accumulation — it takes longer, but the staff handles the count. You’re not standing there feeding a machine and watching it reject the same can three times.
What We Accept
New York’s bottle bill covers most beverage containers with the NY 5¢ deposit marking. Here’s what that means in practice at our Schenectady locations:
✔ Aluminum cans — beer, soda, energy drinks, sparkling water. Must have NY 5 cents or NY 5¢ printed on the container.
✔ Glass bottles — beer, malt beverages, wine coolers. Same deposit rule applies.
✔ Plastic bottles — soda, water, iced tea, sports drinks with the NY 5¢ deposit. Sports caps are fine.
What we cannot take:
✖ Milk containers or dairy jugs — no deposit, not covered under the bottle bill.
✖ Cider jugs (the gallon kind from the orchard) — same situation, no deposit.
✖ 5-gallon water jugs or large water cooler containers.
✖ Anything without the NY 5¢ or NY 5 cents label. If it didn’t come with a deposit, we can’t redeem it.
If you’re ever unsure whether a specific container qualifies, check the label before you load up the car. The NY 5¢ marking is usually near the top of the can or on the bottle’s neck area. If it’s there, you’re good.
“No machines means no rejections. Our staff counts manually, which means that slightly dented can, the bottle with a scuffed label, or the mixed bag of brands all get counted without drama.”
Not Just Walk-Ins: Who Else Uses Our Schenectady Locations
Most bottle returns in Schenectady are one household at a time. That’s our core traffic — someone cleaning out the garage, finishing off a case from the weekend, or finally dealing with the bag that’s been sitting in the corner for three weeks. We handle that all day every day.
But a good chunk of what we do is larger volume. Here’s who we regularly work with at both Schenectady locations:
Bars, Restaurants & Venues
If you run a bar or restaurant in Schenectady, you know what end-of-week empties look like. Cases and cases of glass, bins of aluminum cans, a floor that starts to feel like a storage unit by Friday night.
Most food and beverage operations either haul their own returns to a supermarket machine during off-hours or just absorb the cost of not doing it at all because it’s too much of a headache.
We do scheduled pickups for bars and restaurants at both Schenectady locations. You tell us what you’ve got and when works, and we coordinate from there. No machine queues, no carrying multiple cases into a grocery store, no counting slips that expire or get lost.
Call (518) 482-2337 or email unlimitedredemptionny@gmail.com to set something up.
Schools, Community Groups & Fundraisers
The bottle drive fundraiser is a Schenectady tradition that goes back decades. Schools, sports teams, church groups, scouts, police associations, organizations across the city have been running bottle drives as a fundraising method for as long as anyone can remember, and it works because the math is honest: every bag of cans is real money.
Both our Kelton and Union St locations are set up to handle fundraising collections. You can bring your collected containers directly to either location for an immediate count and instant payout, or you can schedule a pickup for larger drives if transporting the volume yourself isn’t realistic.
We’ve worked with community groups of all sizes and can handle the logistics so your organization can focus on the fundraising side rather than the sorting and hauling side.
Union College groups specifically, student organizations, Greek chapters, dorm floor fundraisers, the Union St location is your closest option and the staff there is experienced with high-volume college returns. Just give us a heads-up if you’re coming with a significant quantity so we can make sure we’re ready.
Households With Accumulated Volume
Some people return empties every week. A lot of people let them pile up. If you’ve got six months of cans in the basement or a garage that’s starting to look like a recycling depot, that’s not a problem at either Schenectady location. There’s no upper limit on what you can bring in. Show up, hand it over, get paid. If the volume is large enough that a pickup makes more sense than you loading it into your car, schedule a pickup.
Schedule a Pickup from Your Schenectady Address
Not everyone can easily transport a large load of empties. If you’ve got more than you can fit in your car, or if you just don’t want to deal with loading it up, we do pickups.
Pickup scheduling is done through unlimitedredemption.com/contact-us. Fill out the form with your address, an estimate of how many bottles and cans you have, and your preferred date and time. If you can pre-count them and bag them in clear bags, that speeds up the process on our end and ensures the payout happens faster.
Pickups work for individual households with large volumes, bars and restaurants needing regular scheduled service, and organizations running fundraisers who can’t easily transport multiple bags at once.
Our two Schenectady locations are part of a network of 11 bottle and can return centers across the Capital Region and Hudson Valley, all inside Beer Universe stores.
